Starting at the age of ten, her father, David DownHeart, became abusive towards her and drank every night he came home from work. There is a scar on the bottom half of her cheek from a broken beer bottle. Her father had thrown it at her face during his fits and deeply scratched her skin.At the age of sixteen, Abby and David moved back to New York City and into a Hydra Safe House. Diana previously owned the home before she met David and never sold it. Once she died, the Nazi Organization decided to renovate the home and turn it into a Hydra base for David.On the night of their arrival, the raven-haired found a photo of her Mother and Tony Stark that read, "Tony & Diana. Forever and always best friends." In search of Tony, she met a man named Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. The next day, he would bring Abby to meet Tony.Unfortunately, due to an interruption from her father, the meeting with Tony was cut short. She had to head home to meet a man named Tobias Cane. Tobias Cane was a sadistic and cruel leader of Hydra, a friend of David DownHeart and Diana Russo's killer. He enjoyed watching people suffer. The older male drugged the young girl's water when she arrived and brought her to a Hydra Base in an unknown location. Abby was tortured, mind-wiped and given powers from a radioactive spider.Abby’s powers include the typical spider powers along with paralytic venom and an adrenaline enhanced state where she becomes stronger than she already is. In this state, she may zone out and not remember her actions. Additionally, her eyes also turn a deep shade of red.Tobias Cane dubbed her the Rogue Spider, and for two years, she was an assassin for Hydra and trained with the Winter Soldier (A.KA. James Buchanan Barnes).After miraculously gaining her memory back, she made a daring escape and has been with the Avengers ever since.

Abby suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the abuse from her father and from being captured and tortured by Hydra.After her escape, Rogue Spider made it her mission to capture Tobias Cane and bring him to justice for what he did to her and her mother. Four years later, Tony Stark adopts Abby into his family.She is fluent in German and Russian since she had to teach herself the language during her time in Hydra.
